Steinunn Sigurðardóttir’s story begins in Reykjavík, Iceland, where the natural world became both her first teacher and her lifelong collaborator. Growing up amidst snow-draped landscapes, shifting skies, and endless summer light, she discovered early on that the textures of her surroundings were more than scenery; they were raw material for imagination. At nine years old, she learned to knit, not knowing then that this seemingly simple craft would one day become the cornerstone of her artistry.

Her path carried her across the Atlantic to New York City, where she studied at Parsons School of Design and immersed herself in the heart of the global fashion world. There, and later through work with Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Tom Ford at Gucci, Steinunn refined her understanding of design as both discipline and art form. Yet even within the fast-paced world of high fashion, she remained guided by a quieter wisdom: that the handmade, the tactile, and the rooted could speak louder than spectacle.

In 2000, she returned to Iceland to found her own label, STEiNUNN, a space where Nordic tradition could meet contemporary innovation. What began as a personal vision has since grown into a body of work that celebrates natural fibres, craft heritage, and the poetry of form. Now, 25 years later, the brand stands as a testament to the endurance of authenticity in an industry often defined by change.

Her history is not one of linear progress but of weaving together experiences across continents, Europe, North America, and Asia, each adding new threads to her perspective. This journey has shaped her belief in fashion as a borderless language, one that carries with it both the intimacy of memory and the expansiveness of the global.
